On the First Thursday of every month at 11:30 EST ADHCE provides a networking opportunity to members and interested guests. The monthly meeting includes presentations around current topics of interest, advocacy, and announcements for upcoming events. You can also learn more about the organization and the wonderful work of its members. Students are welcomed.

Robyn O’Halloran PhD, SLP, CPSP, FSPA (Melbourne, Australia) 

TITLE:
Creating Enabling Communication, Disability Inclusive Healthcare Services

PRESENTATION summary:
Dr. O’Halloran professor/speech language pathologist will discuss how the UNCRPD and the WHO ICF can inform the development of inclusive communication health services for persons with disability. Dr. O’Halloran will provide a brief overview of a series of studies that explore what patients and providers need to communicate about in hospital and how the hospital environment, including systems, services and policies are critical to enabling patient-provider communication, before considering future directions. 

BIOGRAPHY:
Associate Professor Robyn O’Halloran has a clinical background in Speech Pathology. She completed her Masters and PhD on identifying the communication needs of people with communication disability in hospital, and investigated how the hospital environment could be modified to support patients with communication disability to communicate and participate in their healthcare. She developed the IFCI:SAI (Inpatient Functional Communication Interview: Screening Assessment and Intervention) published by Plural Publishing, which is a set of resources for health professionals to create enabling hospital environments for patients with communication disability. She is the program lead for ‘Aphasia Access and Inclusion’ in the NHMRC CRE Aphasia Recovery and Rehabilitation based at La Trobe University, Melbourne.
