On Thursday April 3rd, 2025 at 11:30-12:30 PM EST we will present:

Panel Topic:  Disability and Climate Disasters in Rural America: Informing health care practitioners about what disaster researchers have learned from persons with disabilities and their lived experiences.

Summary of presentation:  We summarize evidence from our recent brief reviewing the evidence on climate- and disaster-related challenges affecting people with disabilities in rural communities and present corresponding opportunities to address them.

Climate change threatens to widen the myriad inequities people with disabilities already experience, especially in rural areas with capacity and resource gaps. Policymakers, emergency managers, and local leaders need more evidence and robust strategies for disability-forward climate and disaster resilience planning and investments designed with equity in mind.

To support these goals, we synthesized insights and recommendations from interviews with disabled people with lived expertise, national experts and local practitioners in disability health and disaster equity, climate change and disaster researchers, emergency managers, and rural community development experts about how to address planning and policy gaps in rural areas.

Panelists: Bios:

  • Anne N. Junod, PhD: Junod is an environmental and rural social scientist and senior research associate in the Housing and Communities Division's climate and communities practice area at the Urban Institute, where her research centers on environmental justice issues related to climate change, disasters, and energy development.
  • Nina Russell: Russell is a research assistant in the Housing and Communities Division at the Urban Institute and a member of the Disability Equity Policy Initiative. Her research interests include disability policy, accessibility in community spaces, public housing, and educational equity.
  • Susan Popkin, Phd: Popkin is an Institute fellow in the Race and Equity Division and co-director of the Disability Equity Policy Initiative at the Urban Institute. She is a nationally recognized expert on public and assisted housing programs and disability and housing policy.

We look forward to you joining us and sharing your latest work toward equity in disability health care, or just listening and learning from our amazing members and guests!  Students and advocates are always welcomed!
